Specific to this Data Element:
    Descriptive history:
Low density lipoproteins (also know as LDL-cholesterols) are calculated from the Freidwald equation based on concentrations of cholesterol, triglyceride and high density lipoprotein. LDL-cholesterols have been entered continuously since 1983. During this time, different methods have been used to provide the LDL-cholesterol values. calculated low density lipoprotein (ldl)' refers to computations made at the GRC (see description of low density liporotein (ldl)' -- file 002, card 4). From 1991 to the present, LDL-cholesterol levels have been calculated from plasma using Abbott-CCX.

LDL-cholesterol (see above) measured in different sample types and with different methodologies are not equivalent. The calculated low density lipoprotein' values in this file are entered as is. Longitudinal and cross-sectional analyses made over time periods where changes occurred in the methodology require adjustment to achieve consistancy (for more information please contact investigators).
