Specific to this Data Element:
    Descriptive history:
Triglycerides have been measured continuously since 1959. During this time, different methods and different laboratories have provided the triglyceride values. true triglycerides' refers to measurements made at the GRC that had free glycerol correction (see description of triglyceride -grc' -- file 002, card 1 & triglyceride-bs' -- file 002, card 2 & ccx triglyceride' -- file 002, card 4). From 1983 to 1992 true trigycerides were measured on the Abbott ABA-200 analyzer. From 1982 to 1987 values were obtained from serum and from 1987 to 1992 plasma samples were used.

N.B. -- from 1991 to the present, triglyceride measurements have been measured in plasma using Abbott-CCX analyzer (see ccx triglyceride'-- file 002, card4)

Triglyceride measurements made from different sample types and methodologies are not equivalent. The triglyceride-grc' values in this file are entered as is. Longitudinal and cross-sectional analyses made over time periods where changes occurred in the methodology require adjustment to achieve equivalency (for more information please contact investigators).

    Frequency of data collection:
From 1981 to 1993 the triglyceride values were measured only on those subjects known to have an elevated triglyceride or cholesterol in the past or on the initial visit.
