Descriptive history:
Cholesterols have been measured continuously since 1959. During this time, different methods and different
laboratories have provided the cholesterol values. cholesterol-grc' refers to measurements made at the GRC (see
description of cholesterol -bs' -- file 002, card 2 & ccx cholesterol' -- file 002, card 4). A brief chronology of the
cholesterol-grc' measurement follows:
Dates Sample Type Method
1959 - 1982 serum Abell-Kendall
1983 - 1987 serum Abbott
1987 - 1992 plasma Abbott
N.B. -- from 1991 to the present, cholesterol measurements have been measured in plasma using Abbott-CCX
analyzer (see ccx cholesterol'-- file 002, card4)
Cholesterol measurements made from different sample types and methodologies are not equivalent. The
cholesterol-grc' values in this file are entered as is. Longitudinal and cross-sectional analyses made over time
periods where changes occurred in the methodology require adjustment to achieve equivalency (for more
information please contact investigators).
