5.2.1 Fixed-Field Data, BLS$CDS$FIX$DAT
These data are drawn from the BLSA fixed-field masterfile (on
the BLSA M computer system, this file is referred to as a global
with the name ^VF) and is either testing values expressed in
particular units of measure or discretely encoded numeric values.
Researchers are advised to consult the layout book for more
comprehensive background information on these data items.
Because of the large amount of "missing data", the file is
structured as variable-length records, delimited by commas (",").
In the chart below, the column labeled "position" is the field
number of the data item within each record. The "source" column is
the place in the masterfile from which the data is drawn, expressed
as <information type>-<card>-<column>. In the
"variable label" part of the descriptor files, for both SAS and
SPSS, this source in formation is prepended to the text description
of the data item. Data is expressed as real numbers, except that
(in an attempt to keep the records as short as possible) any data
which is a whole number is expressed as an integer (without a
decimal point). A "-.1" indicates missing values.
5.2.1.1 Notices Regarding Fixed-Field Data,
BLS$CDS$FIX$DAT
Due to the evolutionary nature of the BLSA, data recording
methods and testing protocols have changed repeatedly since its
inception in 1958. For this reason, the user will encounter large
amounts of missing data in this file. Some of these missing values
indicate that a participant was not due to be scheduled for a
particular test during that visit to the BLSA, was not available
for testing, or declined to participate. Other missing values
indicate periods of time either before the institution of a
particular protocol or after its discontinuation. Still other
missing values result when a protocol or methodology has changed
enough to warrant relocation or re-interpretation of the data.
This is best exemplified by the history and physical data, which
was originally type 1 for males and 901 for females, but has now
been restructured and moved to 801 for both. In this case, 1 or
901 data may be present for a participant's early visits and
missing for recent visits, while 801 data will conversely be
missing early and present late.
Another caveat relates to the changes of protocol that have
occurred. For example, lab results were obtained from at least
three different sources over the history of the study. This means
that values may not be entirely comparable across visits. Also,
data relating to some studies has been "cleaned-up" by subsequent
investigators, but the original values may not have been replaced
by the massaged data, as in the case of smoking data.
5.2.1.2 How to Find Data Items in BLS$CDS$FIX$DAT
Due to the size of this file and the number of data items it
contains, a researcher may not know, offhand, what data items might
contain data of interest to the inquiry at hand. There are several
approaches to finding relevant data items. The first would be to
refer to the cross reference listing (section 5.3) or the data type
index (section 5.4) in this document. Secondly, a researcher could
use the VAX editor to search the machine readable version of this
document, BLS$CDS$DOC$TXT for keywords describing the desired data.
Or, he could search the "variable label" portion of either the SAS
or SPSS descriptor files (BLS$CDS$FIX$SAS and BLS$CDS$FIX$SPS,
respectively). Another option is to consult with the DM staff.
